A major concern of anyone going on holiday anywhere is the type of food that they will be able to find. That needn't be a worry when coming to Kos. There are all types of restaurants to cater for any taste and whim.
 So, if you're not the very adventurous type and prefer to stick to mince and potatoes or beans on toast, there are plenty of establishments that offer pub style lunches and such. For the slightly more daring there is a wide variety of international cuisine available throughout the island ranging from creamy mouthwatering Italian, to spicy sweet and sour Chinese, flaming hot Indian curries, chili smacking Mexican burritos and of course fast food ranging from souvlaki (kebabs) to burgers including Big Macs.
However as the saying goes, when in Rome, or in this case Greece, do as the Greeks do. Break away from the mainstream and try the local cuisine in the traditional and usually family run tavernas. Although each taverna by law is required to have a menu, it is frequently theoretical.
 The menu arrives. You agonise over what you'll have, trying not to get flustered by the Greek alphabet or the not so helpful tourist translations like "boiled village weeds" when someone comes to take your order, generally the younger generation of the family - the older ones are in the kitchen and as you stumble through trying to order in Greek, they reply, often in faultless English, German, Dutch, wherever you happen to be from and inform you of the dishes of the day, which may or may not be in the menu. As a matter of fact no Greek ever asks for a menu at a taverna. It's a matter of taking your seat, ordering your drinks and asking, "What's good today?" This guarantees the freshest meats, fish and vegetables, either charcoal grilled to perfection or slow cooked in their own juices to the point where they literally melt in your mouth like chocolate. It's not like a home cooked meal, it is a home cooked meal. Just wash it down with some local wine and you're ready for the afternoon siesta. |
