Nisyros is a pace of wild beauty and was created by a volcanic eruption although mythology has a different version. The capital and harbour of the island is Mandraki with its white houses spread out under the dominating rock of the monastery of Panagia Spilianis. At a height of 150 metres above the harbour, the castle of Spilianis sits imposingly verifying that the Ioannite Knights had also come to Nisyros. Th e view from the castle is fantastic. Inside the castle one sees the monastery of Panagia (the Virgin Mary) who is also the guardian protector of the island. The walls of the old city and the remains of temples as well as an ancient cemetery from the 4th century BC are clearly evident.
There are only a few settlements in Nisyros. On ones way to Nikia, the mountainous graphical village, one is greeted by the impressive crater of the volcano in the area of Laki As one gets closer, the vegetation dwindles and the scenery becomes dry and wild. One of the three volcano craters with a diameter of 260 metres and a depth of 30 metres opens up before one's feet and transports visitors into a surreal world. The path leads all the way down to the heart of the crater where the sulphuric gases escape spreading a punge nt smell in the air.
Nisyros has only a few beaches so most people prefer to spend their time in the kafeneia (coffee shops) tasting the local sweets. The beach at Chochlakia is unique with black volcanic rocks in contrast to the beach at Palous, a little fishing village, where the beach is fine and sandy with trees in the background.

Boats sail from Nisyros to the small of island of Giali which shimmers as the rays of the sun are reflected from its rocks. There is a small settlement there with a wonderful sandy beach. |
