Very near the more tourist orientated islands of the Dodecanese there are other smaller and very peaceful islands with marvelous beaches and a nightlife limited to the tables at the tavernas at the harbour with a glass of local wine for company.
One such island is Lipsi, which comes to life in August when most of the former inhabitants return to their island to spend their holidays. The only way to get to know these islands is by walking around as the roads are not suitable for passenger vehicles. It is a splendid opportunity to return to nature and the simple island lifestyle. Long peaceful morning walks are ideal to discover the quiet beaches of which Platy Gialos with its wonderful striking blue waters is probably the most beautiful. Old churches, the ruins of a castle at Kouseli and the remains of an ancient temple are there to be discovered as well.
Arki is the largest of the chain of islands north of Lipsi. Its harbour lies at the innermost point of the double inlet with old and new stone houses built around it. There are very few rooms to rent both on Arki and neighbouring Marathi.
The northernmost island of the Dodecanese is beside the coast of Asia Minor and is called Agathonisi. It is perfect for anyone seeking clean waters, sun and total serenity. These little islands have daily connections with Patmos during the summer while Lipsi also has connecting routes to Leros, Rhodes and other Dodecanese islands. |
